Originally named Louis's River by Wm. Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and colloquially known as "The River of No Return". The Salmon River basin contains most (up to 70 percent) of the remaining salmon and steelhead habitat in the Columbia River Basin. It is purportedly the longest (425 miles) undammed western river in the US. The Salmon River becomes the dividing line for the two time zones in Idaho, Moutain time, and Pacific time.
